The
Bumptious USA
Everyone knows that the USA is the NO.1 in the world in
economic, education, technology, military and majority of fields. So, it leads
the USA to a bumptious country and the measurement is the best example. The
significance of the measurement unifying is doubtless in modern society, but
the USA seems not to belong to the world on it. At first, the Fahrenheit’s
scale is used in US on temperature, but we know that the Celsius is easier
which, also known as centigrade, is defined by the freezing and boiling points
of water. In contrary, the Fahrenheit is complicated much more. After living in
US for six months, I can’t recognize it very well and the fact testify what I
think about it: by now, most countries use the Celsius rather than the
Fahrenheit scale in the world. Besides US, few countries use it including
Cayman Islands and Palau. The second, US customary units about length is a kind
of British Imperial system such as inch, yard, mile which is complicated too.
How many yards is one mile? It’s 1760. And how many feet equal to one mile? It’s
5280. My god! Who can remember that? But everyone knows the Metric system very
well even you never use it. One kilometer is one thousands meters and one meter
is one thousands millimeters. Very easy! Why the Imperial countries like the UK
and Canada use the easier Metric instead of the imperial, but the US insist on
it? I can’t understand. Meanwhile, we know few countries besides US use the
imperial including Myanmar and Liberia. The USA is the most powerful country in
the world, but lags behind the world in measurement.
